THEMES
The Panchagangavali estuarine region is an expansive watery terrain, our field work moving along a transect through the estuary, between the sea and upriver to the Ghats mountains. Multiple anchors of relational understandings have emerged as themes to thicken and delve deep into including more-than-human kinships, multiplicity of watery conditions between salty and fresh, aquapelagic relations amongst communities, as well as vocabularies that hold local understandings and conditions through everyday practices of livelihoods and dwelling in this world of flux.
I explore experiential notions of kinship amongst the Beary folk that reveals deep interrelations amongst land, water, atmosphere and the human and more-than-human inhabitants, by shifting my movements across diverse conditions of wateriness.
On the northern bulge of the town of Kundapura where the kunda meets the brackish waters of the estuary, resides the Kharvi folk, an old fishing community that primarily dwell and practice in the flux of the estuarine backwaters. They dwell with the tides.
When dwelling in this region or working in the estuary, one follows the rhythms of the tides, primarily wading into the shallow waters following the low tide. The Kharvis are amphibious peoples, and have relationalities with particular locales in the intertidal grounds.
As one moves through these fluid places, a particular language becomes evident - of an idiolect of the estuary and region. Each activates the imagination as relational to the context or present conditions of wetness - material, temporal, spatial and sentient.
