Monsoon School
The Monsoon School
Dates: 24-29 June 2024     |     Place: Manipal

The monsoon in India is revered and long awaited after the heat of the summer in the subcontinent. This rain is a source of water for vast fields and farms, food production and sources of drinking water; it enlivens the environment, is mating season for many creatures that inhabit diverse grounds; it soaks in and shifts the soils, and transforms materials and biota.

The Monsoon School offers an opportunity to learn new methods of doing research with rain. Come discover the goings-on in this wet world through transcorporeal engagement of art and design practices.

The Monsoon School is oriented around a multitude of conditions of ‘wetness’, that life depends on. How do we include natural conditions in everyday life? How can we see wateriness as a participant  in our homes? How can we respond to the water and climate crises? How do we reimagine our environment so we can be and change with nature? The Monsoon School is a space to experiment with mixed methods of seeing and recording places, and assembling new narratives, to better understand processes and practices that shape places.

We will be presenting our work in the Panchagangavali estuarine region at the Royal Geographic Society. The work juxtaposes the diversity of landscapes and waterscapes, and related practices, movements, and changes, with the static world that development plans put in place through map-making.
